Blog tour & 4* review - Brit Boys: With Toys M/M Boxed Set

Thank you for inviting us, the authors of Brit Boys: WithToys, to your blog today, it’s great to be here. This boxed set of M/M stories is very special to us and is the follow on from last year’s Brit Boys: On Boys.

Brit Boys boxed sets feature British characters in British locations and are written by British based authors. Each story is unique, fun and seriously hot!

Blurb

From coast to coast and city to country Brit boys enjoy playing with each other and their toys. Not any old toys, though; guitars, rope, plugs and Moleskine journals all prove to be enormous fun. Throw in a shop that’s wall to wall with kinky ideas, a journalist on the lookout for the next big thing, and Dominants who insist on obedience and there’s sure to be something to cater for everyone’s taste.

Whether it’s a quickie or a slow indulgence, Brit boys know how to hit the spot and they aim to please every time. So take a ride, fly high, come enjoy these sexy boys and their toys.

Author Interviews

Today the authors are answering this question… What inspired your story in the Brit Boys: With Toys Anthology?

Ashe Barker

Right from the beginning I knew I wanted my Boys to be bikers. The bridge where they first meet, the Devil’s Bridge as it is known, was built in the 13th century and crosses the river Lune in Kirkby Lonsdale. Bikers congregate there every Sunday without fail and I pass there most weekends so it didn’t take much to get my imaginative juices flowing.

M K Elliott

I like to write my male characters in my m/m stories in the same way I write my characters in my regular books. They tend to be alpha males, who will often clash, and what could be more alpha than a bare-knuckle boxer? But I also don’t like everything to be black and white, which is why this alpha male, Conner, also has a softer, more artistic side.

Lucy Felthouse

I’m quite the fan of a man in uniform, and I suddenly realised that although I’ve written about quite a few different uniforms and professions, I’d never written about a doctor before. I thought it was time for a sexy doctor and his porter boyfriend to get down and dirty in a supply cupboard.

K D Grace

I like the idea that toys can be anything you have the imagination to use for fun, and I couldn’t think of a better way of demonstrating that than what two blokes walking across England might find along their way with which to … erm … entertain each other.

Lily Harlem

I adore a show over here in the UK called Dinner Date. It’s set in a restaurant in London, St Paul’s, and is solely for singles to hook up with a potential romance partner, in the blind date restaurant only the staff have ever met before. I decided after watching this with Mr H one evening that a blind date would be a good place for Mile High Kink Club to start.
Ashley Lister

I’d set myself a challenge. I wanted to write a romance but I wanted to set it in an environment where poetry was important. As writing challenges go it was pretty substantial. The characters in a romance are supposed to be brought together through circumstances where one of them is needed by the other: and under what circumstances would anyone ever need a poet? Answering that question was a real challenge.

Sarah Masters

It was just a case of sitting down and starting to write. Whatever came out was from my subconscious and not a plotted story. I prefer writing that way because when the characters arrive in the page, they’re as new to me as they will be for readers.

Tabitha Rayne

A few things inspired the story – I absolutely love music of any sort, but there’s something about being packed in tight among sweaty bodies at a rock concert that really thrills me. The connection you have to the music and everyone who is there can be a very powerful thing – I wanted to add the sexual element of two lovers enjoying music together in this way.

Review

Overall rating - 4 stars
This is a fantastic collection of short, sexy m/m stories, I can honestly say that I enjoyed all of them. All of the stories are about hot men, and their even hotter encounters with some naughty toys. They have varying degrees of heat and kink, but they are all guaranteed to raise your body temperature and get your heart racing.

Hard Riders by Ashe Barker - 4.5 stars
Hot men in biker leathers, naughty toys and superbikes - what could be sexier? This story really got my motor running - Liam and Jackson are both amazing characters, the storyline was interesting and the sex was HOT! There's a twist in the story that I wasn't expecting, but it brought more depth and emotion to the story. The ending felt a little abrupt, but that was only because I was loving these guys so much that I wanted the story to be longer. Four and a half stars.

All Roped Up by M.K Elliott - 4.5 stars

Set in the testosterone fuelled world of underground bare knuckle boxing, All Roped up is one of my favourite stories in this boxed set. Journalist Alex arranges an interview with champion fighter Connor in the hope of using him to get an exclusive about illegal betting at his fights. Things don't exactly go to plan when Alex actually likes Connor and they discover that they have compatible kinks, but how will Connor react when he discovers what Alex had planned to achieve with his interview?

I really liked Connor, he had a lot of layers to his character. It took me a little longer to like Alex, but in the end I realised he was perfect for Connor. These two were hot together! This is a great quick read - four and a half stars.

Doctor's Orders by Lucy Felthouse - 4 stars
I've read quite a few of Lucy Felthouse's books now and I really like her writing style, so it was no surprise to me that I enjoyed this book. Doctor's Orders is about a couple who have been together for a long time in a D/s relationship. It's hospital porter Aaron's birthday, but as he's at work he's not expecting it to be very exciting - until his doctor boyfriend Blake drags him into a supply cupboard for a birthday treat. I loved the relationship between these two - they may have been together for a while but the spark is still very much alive. This is an enjoyable story that succeeded in putting a smile on my face. Doctor's Orders receives four out of five stars.

Toys for Boys by K.D Grace - 4.5 stars
Toys for Boys is one of my favourite books in this box set - it is hot, has a unique storyline and  endearing characters. I think this is the first book I've read where the author has written themselves into the story as a character, I wasn't sure about it to start with but it actually works well.

KD Grace is struggling to think of a story that she needs to write for the anthology Brit Boys: With Toys when she meets two guys with the idea for a perfect story - their story! Will and Doc are hiking across the country in awful weather so they can test out gadgets for the magazine they write for. They get off to a bumpy start as they really don't get on - but despite the freezing cold weather things soon start to heat up between them.

This author has one heck of an imagination - if there was an award for the most creative sex toys KD Grace would be sure to win it! Toys for Boys is a very entertaining story so it gets four and a half stars.

Mile High Kink Club by Lily Harlem - 4.5 stars
I really enjoyed this book, it was fun and sexy with interesting characters. One of its main themes was enforced chastity through the use of a cock cage, which I found surprisingly hot. Rhodri is looking for a submissive to love but has had no luck finding his perfect match so he joins an exclusive dating agency. He soon finds out that it was money well spent as the agency match him with Darius who does indeed seem perfect for him. I really liked Darius, and I am totally in love with Rhodri, he's a real sweetheart. Their chemistry together was strong, and there were some very steamy scenes. I really enjoyed this story so it gets four and a half stars.

Open Mike by Ashley Lister - 4 stars

Open Mike is a sweetly sexy romance starring two poets, Mike and Ken. When they meet at a poetry night Ken asks Mike for advice on reading and writing poetry - but he soon finds out that there is a lot more that Mike can teach him. It took me a little while to get into this story, but once I did I actually really enjoyed it. Open Mike receives four out of five stars.

I Get You by Sarah Masters - 4 stars
This is another great short story, with loveable characters and lots of heat. Morton is Warren's boss, and they have secretly fancied each other for ages. Warren suddenly blurts out his feelings for Warren and invites him on a trip - I'm not sure which one was more surprised when Morton actually says yes. This is an intriguing story about being true to yourself and being loved for who you are. Morton and Warren are really good together, their chemistry is sizzling. Four stars!

The Guitar by Tabitha Rayne - 4 stars

The Guitar is a sweet story that I thoroughly enjoyed. Kel is shy and kind of awkward, he only feels comfortable in his own skin when he's on stage playing his guitar. He is surprised when he catches of the eye of Damien, he just can't understand what he sees in him. Will Kel's insecurities ruin what could become a special relationship?

I really liked both Kel and Damien and wanted things to work out for them as they were so good together. This is nice short story that receives four out of five stars.

Review
Wow! What a climax to Bash and Angelica's story! I devoured this book as quickly as humanly possible, it was amazing. There were lots of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, it is such an exciting story. Full of suspense, danger, emotion and heat, it is a book that I couldn't put down. The BDSM is a lot more intense in this book - there is a raw passion in the scenes that had my pulse racing and my temperature rising.

This book picks up right where the last book ended, with Angelica being kidnapped by a rival MC! We're led on whirlwind adventure as Angelica tries to escape, while Bash and the MC try to rescue her. What happens next will change their lives - so buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride!

This triolgy is expertly written and is a must read for me. There is so much going on with many layers to the story - there's no chance of the reader getting bored of this book! Bash vol III definitely gets five fabulous stars!

Interview with Candace Blevins

What is for you the perfect book hero?

I don’t think there’s a single description. I’ve fallen in love with good guys, bad guys, antiheros… I need them to be honest, but otherwise, I’m not sure you can put the perfect hero into a tidy little box.

When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?

In the beginning I was a total pantser. Now, I’m kind of a hybrid pantser/planner. I know my characters inside and out before I start, and I know their backstories, as well as the main events of the book, and the basic ending. However, if I do much more than that, my muse gets bored. She often takes the stories in directions I hadn’t intended. We end up at the same ending, but there are often several fun detours, along the way.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

When I got my first decently-sized royalty check.

I used to juggle professionally, and I didn’t consider myself a “professional” juggler until I made a good bit of money doing so, as well. For some, the fact they write everyday makes them a writer, and that’s fine for other people, but it wasn’t real for me until I was holding a check.

Each book in the Safeword series highlights a couple with a different BDSM issue to resolve.

Her urban fantasy series, Only Human, gives us a world where weredragons, werewolves, werelions, three different species of vampires, as well as a variety of other mythological beings exist.

Candace's two paranormal romance series, The Chattanooga Supernaturals and The Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club, are both sister series to the Only Human series, and give some secondary characters their happily ever after.

Author interview, giveaway & 5* review - Coveted by Alannah Lynne

coveted_banner

INTERVIEW WITH ALANNAH LYNNE

How did you come up with the idea for this story? I started COVETED back in 2011 when my husband’s health took a bad turn. He’d battled a brain tumor since 2007, but in 2011 it started to grow and change into a more aggressive kind of tumor, and I was really scared about the future. About that same time, I read an article written by a slave whose Master died during 9/11. It got me to thinking about moving on after the loss of a soul mate and what it must be like for a submissive whose entire world revolves around her Master. Fortunately, once I started writing, Muriel and Mathew took over and made the story all theirs, so it didn’t become too personal for me.

Where do you find your inspiration? Everywhere! LOL It might be from something I’ve read, a television show, or song lyrics. I’d say 80% of my story ideas come from songs. Carmella, in DARING MASQUERADE, was inspired by Katy Perry’s song “Darkhorse” and the line, “She’s a bitch. I call her Karma.”

What are your current projects? The next story I’m gearing up to write is EXPOSED (Pandora’s Playground #2)… Lucas Steele finally gets his HEA. After that, I’ll release STRIPPED (Pandora’s Playground #3) where Mercy from GOING ALL IN (Heat Wave Novel #3) will face her demons. I’m pretty sure there will be at least 1 more Pandora’s Playground story, but I might release one or two Heat Wave stories before the 4th Pandora’s Playground. I still have to write Heat Wave stories for Steve, Robby, and Tyler. :)

What is for you the perfect book hero? For me, he needs to be a little wounded so he can realize how much better his life is with the heroine in it. I really like heroes with a sense of humor (which was a struggle for me while writing COVETED because in the beginning, Mathew had no sense of humor). And he’s got to have great eyes and a killer smile. A sexy body is good, but the smile is most important.

List three books you have recently read and would recommend. “Hell or High Water” by Julie Ann Walker “Playing with Pleasure” by Erika Wilde “Alex” by Sawyer Bennett

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Thank you!!! I’ve had a sporadic release schedule over the past several years, and I appreciate them sticking with me and their excitement over new releases. The outpouring of love and support and encouragement I’ve received has been nearly overwhelming at times (in the best possible way ;)).

EXCERPT

“You need more than a Dom, angel. You need a permanent life partner. I assume you’ll want to remarry. You need someone to come home to at night… You deserve to be held while you're sleeping… To have someone take care of you when you're sick.” She laughed. “Ian didn't do all that. He didn't like to be crowded in his sleep, and he didn't have a clue how to take care of me when sick.” Mathew swallowed and his jaw clenched. “If you were mine, I'd hold you all night, every night. And you can be damn sure I’d be right by your side, tending to your every need, if you were sick.” “So why can't you be mine? Permanently?” “Because I don't know how to do any of the other stuff a man is supposed to do for his wife. Hell, Muriel, I've never, ever taken a woman on a date.” “Bullshit, you do know how to do those things. You’re just stuck on this endless loop of false thinking.” She drew in a deep breath and forced herself to calm. “As for dating… I know you’ve never gone on a real date.” When his eyes flared with surprise, she smiled and admitted, “I know more about you than you think. I’ve always been drawn to you and paid more attention than even I realized. I can show you how to date. Just give it… give us a try.” His head went back and forth again, but hope flickered in his eyes and his chest rose and fell with shallow breaths as he considered her words. After a moment, he said, “I'm always amazed by feminists who argue this lifestyle sets women back a hundred years. There isn't a more kickass feminist on the planet than a sub. You may wear my cuffs and spend a tremendous amount of time on your knees, but you fucking own me. You're the one who has me in chains, and there's not a goddamned thing I can do about it.” Her stomach bottomed out as her heart soared. She didn't think for one second this would be easy—nothing worth fighting for was—but it sure sounded like he’d agreed to being more than temporary play partners, and joy launched her off the table and into his arms.

Masked Lovers

Coveted
She’s his heaven and his hell... Muriel Stewart has spent the past year grieving the loss of her husband. Now that time has passed, her inner submissive demands Muriel find a new relationship to fulfill her need to love and serve. But there’s only one man who makes Muriel yearn for the intimate Dom/submissive connection the way her husband did, and that’s his best friend, Mathew Galindo ... a man who can barely tolerate her presence. Matthew Galindo buried his own heart and needs the day Muriel Stewart married his best friend and business partner. He’s spent the last eleven years keeping Muriel at a distance, tortured by his love for a woman he could never have, and filled with shame for coveting what wasn’t and would never be his. Not even his best friend’s unexpected death could change that fact. Until Muriel decides she’s ready for a new Dom and wants Matthew to fill that role. Having Muriel in his life is all Mathew has ever wanted. She’s his heaven and his hell, and could be his salvation if he can get beyond his past, his shame, and the guilt he feels for not having saved Ian’s life.

Portrait of loving sensuality couple in dark

Review

Alannah Lynne is a completely new author to be - although I have no idea how I haven't heard of her before if all of her books are as good as this one! Coveted is passionate, romantic, full of raw emotion and is completely charming. I read so many BDSM romances, some good and some not so good, but this one stood out for all of the right reasons. It didn't have to be extreme or over the top to capture my attention - the characters spoke for themselves and had me hooked from start to finish.

Muriel lost her loving husband and masterful Dom a year ago, and since then she's cut herself off from her friends and the BDSM lifestyle. Now, with the help of her husband's business partners, she is ready to dip her toe back into the water. Matthew was her husband's best friend as well as one of his business partners, and she's always wondered what she'd done to make him hate her. Muriel seems to be the only one who doesn't know that what Matthew feels for her is the complete opposite of hatred - he's been in love with her for years and went out of his way to avoid her because it was too painful being around the woman that he loved but could never have.  When they are pushed together by a meddling but well meaning friend, Muriel realises she has found the man she wants to serve. Can she convince Matthew that he is good enough for her?

Both Matthew and Muriel are delightful characters. They both have their demons and their flaws, but together they can become whole.  The connection between them is strong, it really felt like they belonged to each other. The BDSM scenes were hot, tasteful and well written - I really enjoyed them. I'll definitely be looking out for more books by this author, as I loved her writing style and how she built the story up. Coveted is a must read for me - five stars!

Blog tour, giveaway, interview & 4* review - Hat Trick by Liz Crowe

HAT TRICK
Book 4
Black Jack Gentlemen
Release Date: July 7, 2015

Blurb:

Detroit’s expansion pro team has a hot star forward, fresh from the English Premiere League. Thanks to a series of fatal misunderstandings coupled with his famous temper, Declan MacGuire only has one thing left to him—soccer—and he’s determined not to make the same mistakes in his new life stateside.

Emily Keller, an accidental low-level PR flunkie for the team watches as Declan gets sucked into a whirlwind romance with Cassandra Dean, the team’s Queen Bee groupie, trying not to be jealous while the woman maneuvers him into a sickeningly familiar situation.

When things escalate, the team is forced to take sides, and Declan faces the toughest choice of his life.

Excerpt

Her ex-husband held out her keys. Emily grabbed them and made her way inside, slipping out of her shoes and dropping her purse on the hall table. When she turned, she was shocked to find him still in the doorway, hands tucked in his pockets.
“Well, what are you waiting for?” She waved a hand, anger slowly but surely replacing her lust. “It’s your damn house. Come on in. Kiss me. Fuck me. Whatever it is you’ve decided you want to do.”
He stood still, head tilted, giving her a curious, searching look. “Is that what you want me to do, Emily?” His voice, normally low and gravelly and bone-chillingly sexy, had gone flat and neutral. Not shifted into seduction mode as she figured he’d do the second they dropped Michelle off for the night.
She crossed her arms over her wrinkled work blouse. “I don’t know, to be honest. But I’m…shit.” She turned away from him and headed for the kitchen. After a couple glasses of expensively filtered water, she turned, not at all surprised to see him there, taking up more space than should be allotted to one man, in a room he’d once spent so much time in, with her, with them, as a family.
A rogue tear slid down her cheek. In a blink he was there, wiping it away, running his hands up her arms, into her hair, pulling her up so their lips met for the first time in a year, but in such as a way it was as if he’d never left. His mouth was firm, in control as his tongue breached her lips, probing, slowly, questioning how far she wanted to go. Emily’s body lurched into high alert, skin pebbling, scalp prickling, nipples hardening under her utilitarian cotton bra.
Everything about him filled all her senses—the crisp fabric of his bright white shirt under her hands, the soft silkiness of his thick hair between her fingers, the rich, starchy, leathery smell of him in her nose. He kept his hands in her hair. Didn’t roam around, grab her boobs or her ass or anything—just kept them connected via the most mind-blowing, toe-curling kiss in her memory.
He broke it off softly, leaving her gasping and gripping his biceps before snaking her hands up around his neck. She wanted him so badly at that moment—wanted a connection with somebody who knew her, understood her, that she didn’t have explain herself to—it manifested as an actual physical pain in her chest. But he took her arms and pulled them from around his neck, kissed both her cheeks, her nose and her lips once more before taking a step away from her.
She nearly fell over into the space he created between them. Her eyes went straight to his crotch, noting the obvious indication of his desire to take this a step further. And why not? They were consenting, formerly married adults. They knew each others’ buttons and could press them, get off, itch scratched, and move on. At that moment Emily wanted nothing more than for Marcus to scratch her damn itch, two or three times.
Shoving out thoughts of Declan and the sound of her own conscience, she lunged for Marcus, determined to get him undressed and between her thighs as fast as possible. He moved away, running a hand across his lips before reaching down to adjust his zipper. She bit her lip, curious, frustrated, and so horny she could taste it in the back of her throat.
“What?” she said, her voice croaky. “I thought you came in here for a reason.”
“I did,” he said, putting a hand on the counter. “But…we can’t. I can’t.”
“Why not? Run out of Cialis?”
He winced, then smiled. “Ah, Emily, I have missed you, even your smart mouth.”
“Well, let me remind you what I can get up to with my mouth.” She reached for him but he grabbed her wrists and stared at her, pissing her off and turning her on even more.

Review

I love Liz Crowe's Black Jack Gentlemen, and Hat Trick is great addition to the series. It brings us another hot but flawed soccer player and another emotional roller coaster ride.  If you've read any of the previous books in this series, you will know not to expect a fluffy hearts and flowers story. Instead you get a no holds barred tale of two individuals who are destined to be together, but who are continually kept apart. There is drama galore and lots of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Liz Crowe tackles some difficult issues in this book, and she does it in a refreshingly honest and realistic way.

Declan has joined the BJG from the English Premier League and is determined to concentrate on reviving his career. He has some big secrets and he left his last club under a dark cloud.  He soon finds himself smitten with glamorous WAG Cassandra, a woman who I grew to hate.  Cassandra is manipulative and cruel, she's a real bitch, but for some reason Declan just can't see it. Emily is newly divorced from her cheating rat of a husband, Marcus, and is working in the Black Jack Gentlemen's PR office. Her favourite player is Declan and they soon become friends. I can't say much more without dropping major spoilers, but suffice to say that they both make mistakes and they both suffer the consequences.

I did struggle a bit with Declan's character, which is the main reason this is four star review instead of a five star one. I found him to be quite weak and he seemed to have very little self respect - I have no idea why he put up with Cassandra for so long, it should have been obvious he was using him. For me he was quite a difficult character to like, but in a strange way this made the story seem that much more realistic. I did really enjoy this story, but just not quite as much as the last two books in this series. Hat Trick is an exciting, emotional story that gets four out of five stars.

Man On
Book 1

Bad boy of European football, Nicolas Garza is about to hit American shores with a vengeance. Signed by the Detroit Black Jack Gentlemen as lynch pin for their expansion club, Nicco only half believes he’s making the right move. But with a past full of ghosts and rotten behavior chasing him from his homeland, he has no real choice.

Parker Rollings is a college soccer superstar, but his parents’ plans for their only son do not include professional athletics. When the Black Jacks approach him to finalize their roster, Parker leaps at the chance to keep playing, leaving behind medical school, stability and his first and only college sweetheart.

Nicco and Parker face off as bitter rivals for a coveted starting spot at midfield and are forced to channel their negative energy into something positive for the sake of the group—and themselves.

All eyes are on the fledgling team in its debut season. It’s crucial that the Black Jacks prove all the doubters wrong. They must make a good showing in the league and with new fans. But player drama, club dynamics, and misplaced priorities may tear it apart before it even begins.

MAN ON EXCERPT

A handful of fresh-faced young Americans interspersed in the group, which made Nicco feel old. Which totally pissed him off. What was Inez thinking anyway? There were two players per position in the room, two strong contenders for each spot—except his. He sipped his water bottle and glared at the Germans. Nervous tension gnawed at his gut but he kept his face calm. Finally when their temporary coach showed up and flipped the blinds closed, he relaxed.
So everyone in the room has to fight for their spot except me? That works.
He dropped his feet to the floor at Rafe’s pointed glance and propped his elbows on the table prepared to ignore the forthcoming pep talk.
He’d already made plans for the night and wanted to rest up beforehand. This goofy welcome pep talk would be as good a time as any. Letting his thoughts wander to the nightclub catering to gay men and promising full discretion, he made himself stop obsessing over the failed therapy session.
The door clicked open and all eyes landed on the tall, blond man who walked in, backpack on his shoulder, dressed to play. Nicco’s scalp tingled at the sight of him—strong torso, long legs, firm jaw covered with several days’ worth of fuzz. Good Christ but he was a perfect specimen. Nicco kept his casual stance but startled when the kid’s bright blue eyes and huge white smile landed on him.
He resisted the urge to smile back. Something about the man made Nicco distinctly uncomfortable but horny at the same time. He suddenly wished he’d held onto the shrink’s business card.
“And Parker will be working with you, Nicco.”
He sat up, knocking his water to the floor as Rafe’s words got his immediate attention. What the fuck? He stared at the polite hand the kid stuck in his face then over at Rafe. His throat closed up between the proximity of the impossibly handsome man and realization of the fact that the vision of masculine perfection he’d lusted after for the last few seconds wanted to take his spot on the field.
Oh hell no.
He leaned back again and ignored his inner polite self. Instead, he smirked, ignored the punk, and turned to face their coach as if suddenly fascinated by what the guy had to say. Parker stood a minute, and Nicco watched his face turn red before he sat in the one empty chair nearest the door.
Rafe passed out new phones, reminded them of their obligation to “tweet” and “post profile updates” on Facebook at least three times a day. All shit Nicco already knew. Rafe’s hot young lady assistant issued key cards to the ones who’d just arrived, including the kid Nicco studiously ignored but whose very presence was making the front of his jeans uncomfortable.

When fate strips him of free will and the ability to choose his own path, he retreats from everyone and everything, destroying his hard-won career in the process.

Dragged back from the brink by his desperate family, Metin reluctantly agrees to coach the Black Jack Gentlemen Detroit soccer team but remains debilitated by memories and loss. When a surprising friendship emerges, it renews his passion for life, providing much needed solace… and extreme complications.
A saga of family dynamics and gender politics that cuts across cultures and circumstance, Red Card illustrates the human capacity for forgiveness through the life of one man as he attempts to rebuild his shattered existence.

RED CARD EXCERPT
“It’s your hips that are the problem.”
Alicia started at the sound of his now-familiar, sing-song accent. She’d been kicking a line of balls into the net, one after the other for about fifteen minutes since she’d been early in her haste to get the hell out of her house and away from her sister’s violent disapproval.
Taking a breath, she crossed her arms and studied him. Metin wore a pair of dark blue soccer shorts, plain heather-gray shirt, and cleats, as easily as he’d worn the dress pants and crisp cotton shirt the night she’d met him—the night you fucked him, you mean.
He stood, loose-limbed, at ease in his element. His teeth glowed against his dark skin. The eyes she had melted into not forty-eight hours ago shone with something she couldn’t identify—happiness? Sarcasm? Lust? Who knew? Hoping to hide her frustration, she bent down to tie her laces tighter so he couldn’t see her face flush when her gaze hit the front of his shorts.
She rose, determined to resist the take-me-now aura the guy threw her way. He probably didn’t even realize he did it. Not anymore. “Okay, I’ll bite. What’s wrong with my hips?”
“Come at me.”
She blinked, confused. “Um, huh?”
“Attack, make like you want to score. You know? Like you do in games?”
“Oh, right.” Dropping the ball tucked under her arm, she glanced over his shoulder at her target. He let her, trotting backward a few steps, then made for the ball. She feinted, maintaining possession before dribbling a few more feet.
He came out of nowhere as she was about to make her final scoring charge, stripping her of the ball and sending her crashing to the turf.
“Ow. Shit,” she muttered, getting to her feet, a familiar, angry competitiveness stripping all the horniness right out of her head. “I still don’t get what….”
“Do it again.” He kicked the ball toward her, harder than necessary, but she stopped it and placed her cleat on top contemplating a different strategy.
Shifting to the side, she danced past him, using all the speed she could muster, and made straight for the goal. And there he was again, taking the damn ball away from her as if she were a rookie.
She tried to shield it, putting her back to him and sensing every inch of his warm, perfect physique against her skin. Forcing herself to focus, she landed a hard elbow to his midsection and escaped his trap then traveled down the field alone, turning on all her motors, no longer hearing anything, way into her zone.
And then, the damn man appeared in front of her again, batting the ball between her legs and taking off in the other direction, hand to his side where she’d nailed him.
“God damn it, Metin. What is your point? You’re a pro. I’m an unemployed college graduate. You’re a man. I’m not. You make money at this, and I never will. What the hell are you trying to prove?” Her legs hurt from her workout the day before and she could barely catch her breath. She was, in a word, miserable. But the sight of him a few yards away, messing with the soccer ball while he stared at her, brought visions of tackling him, holding him down, and kissing him right to the front of her overheated brain.
“Once more.” The soccer ball smacked the back of her legs so hard she yelped. “That’s your fucking yellow card for the elbow. One more and you’ll sit.”

Numb with thinly veiled grief, he walks into the club’s front office completely unaware that an encounter with true destiny awaits him.

Now that her complicated circumstances have landed her as legal counsel for the expansion Black Jacks team, she holds herself aloof in body and spirit. Nothing and no one gets past her fiercely guarded walls. Until the day she looks up to greet the new goalie standing in her doorway, his raw combination of vulnerability and strength making her breathless.

SHUT OUT EXCERPT

“Vaughn! Goddamn it.”
Brody sat, staring at his feet, ignoring the usual post-match noise and bustle around him. Most especially he hoped to hide from the voice of Rafael Inez, the club’s manager. Reminders of how poorly he’d performed today were not going to help him. He’d been playing soccer in some capacity since he walked, since he had memories of anything. And today had been among his worst, ever.
From the streets of Nashville and the hills of East Tennessee, he’d been on teams, in clubs, trained by himself, trained by pros, the whole goddamned nine yards. He’d seen every sort of match condition, coaching, officiating misstep, and parental overreaction. He realized what it meant to suck serious ass—he’d done so today. And he understood why, too—hence the dark clouds draping his consciousness
“Fucking… shit.” The team manager drew closer, his deep voice joined by another, as a sort of bonus, really. He leaned against the dark wood lining the walls in the over-the-top, fancy locker room.
Metin Sevim, the Turkish coach, once a Spanish league phenom, had had the world at his feet until a horrific tragedy struck, leaving him drunk and useless for years. Apparently recovered, he had a look on his face Brody Vaughn caught loud and clear—the “we lost and it is pretty much your fucking fault” glare that coaches the world over affected.
Exhausted in mind and spirit, sick of the chewing out before it even started, Brody gazed at both men. Rafe’s snapping eyes reflected the same expression as Metin’s. He opened his mouth first, but the Turk put a hand on his arm. The men regarded each other as the swirl of post-match activity came to a loud peak.
Players in various stages of undress wandered in and out of the main locker room, grabbing towels, pulling on the dress pants, shirts, and ties the club required of them when entering and leaving the facility. One thing Brody would say about the former-hot-headed, player-turned-failure-turned-coach, Metin knew when not to talk. He tilted his head, still pinning Brody with something that faded from this is your fault to what the hell is wrong with you?
Then he sighed and, to Brody’s surprise, dropped onto the chair next to him, leaned forward, elbows on knees, and seemed to examine the expensive, rubberized floor. Brody hadn’t even made it to the shower yet. He felt so weighed down and lethargic, just lifting his arms to put his head in his hands took more energy than existed on the planet. He understood why, along with the fact that there wasn’t a thing to be done about it.
How would he even begin to describe his… issue? Heart pounding, legs aching, shoulder screaming where he’d landed on it, hard, then waved away the trainer at the sixty-fifth minute. By that time all of the players were pretty gassed from the late summer heat, but held on, toe-to-toe, with the Canadian national team in a friendly. The stupid, sneaky forward had seen him wincing, favoring his left shoulder, and drove the ball right in on his newly weakened side. It had been a simple fifty-fifty ball; face to face. He had blown it, him and his overpaid, lame ass, wobbly self.
Thanks to his one quick encounter with the front office legal woman, he’d been left in a quivering, useless, uncertain heap of need. Fuck that. He had to get a grip.

 Author Interview

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

I’m a huge fan of soccer, at almost every level, since my daughter plays at the National league level with her team full of 17 year old girls and we subscribe to every soccer channel available to us. Living in Europe for several years had a lot of influence on that too but honestly, it’s the game with the hottest dudes, so….yeah. I figured, Detroit needed a team and it would be a team full of misfits and outcasts.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

In the Black Jack Gentlemen series there is a “message” or at least a “point” to each book. Man On deals with homosexuality in pro sports. Red Card with (initially) the gender inequality in pro soccer. Shut Out is about two people badly scarred by the super popular BDSM fetish. Hat Trick (the newest book) deals with pro athletes with hot tempers and graspy groupies.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I would say to future readers that taking a chance on Liz Crowe novel might require a leap of faith that even though I’m not giving you any sort of fairy-tale fantasy, I guarantee you will be entertained, perhaps even titillated and satisfied by the end.

Will you write more about these characters?

I’m moving on to some new projects that are pretty exciting but you never know….
