Release blitz - Medusa's Heart by Joey W. Hill

John Pierce has been in covert operations all his adult life. He doesn’t know anything else but that and being a Dom, because that’s how he blows off steam and balances the nagging emptiness inside of him. Since he was a kid, he’s carried around an infatuation that’s grown into an embarrassing obsession. He’s in love with a myth—Medusa
“Mad Merlin” Maddock doesn’t think that’s crazy. He believes in powers deeper and stronger than men or gods, a connecting energy like the oceans. To those powers, healing a broken heart could create a ripple effect in the universe impacting all, even if that heart lives in the alternate dimension of folklore and myth. JP is the first one Maddock plans to send across those lines to bond with the woman he’s always wanted.
JP agrees to be his first guinea pig for two reasons. One, Maddock is so damn convincing, and two, the need for her has tripled since he met the guy. If Maddock can send JP into her world, JP will let nothing stop him from claiming her for his own and healing her heart, because he’s sure as hell she’s the missing piece of his.
He just has to make sure she doesn’t turn him into lawn ornamentation first.

EXCERPT from MEDUSA’S HEART by Joey W. Hill
In this scene, John is sleeping on the beach of Medusa’s island, when she decides to pay him a visit…
* * * * *
His propensity for light sleeping came in handy. He roused fully at her approach, nearly silent though it was. It took a few minutes of patient waiting, of keeping his breath the same steady rise and fall, before she drew even closer. He inhaled her earthy floral scent and nearly interrupted his smooth breathing routine, thanks to the slight give of his cushioned mat which told him she’d knelt and stretched out on her hip directly behind him.
He’d told her he wouldn’t lie to her. Not telling her he was awake wouldn’t fall in that category, would it?
For someone as wary as her, yes, it would.
“I’m glad you came back to see me,” he said without moving or opening his eyes. From the ripple of air along his back, he realized she’d been reaching out to touch him, and cursed his overdeveloped conscience as she drew her hand away.
“You don’t have to talk,” he said. “I’ll just keep dozing if you want me to.”
“Yes. I prefer that.”
He grunted, settling his body further. By some miracle, he did talk himself into dozing, probably because drifting back and forth into an awareness of her was a pleasant surprise every time. Then she touched him.
It brought him instantly awake, but this time, conscience be damned, he kept his breathing and body the same as if he’d been in the world of dreams. Because this was like a dream.
He felt the pads of her fingers and the claws together this time. The curved tips grazed his skin a couple inches above her fingertips. She moved her touch along his shoulder, his back.
“I prayed to Athena for strength. And she sent you. I don’t know what that means. I know what I want it to mean, but my wants… I stopped wanting things. I thought I’d stopped wanting things.”
We never stop wanting things, my lady. We just sometimes stop asking because it hurts too much to not have them. He’d felt that way plenty of times. But he stayed silent, because she wasn’t talking to the conscious him.
That smooth worn rope feeling heralded a snake sliding against his upper arm and down to his hip, then it retreated. The other snakes seemed to be keeping their distance and staying still, for he didn’t hear or feel any others. She slid her touch down to his waist and fingered the waistband, the back pocket of his jean shorts. She was obviously intrigued by the way they fit. When that talon slid along the inside of his waistband in back, inadvertently stroking over the crease between his buttocks, he bit back his natural desire to turn and take over.
Had she ever touched a man by choice? Without fear? He didn’t know, and didn’t want to stop her. He remembered her chiding him for thinking she didn’t know how to fix a wheelbarrow, or what a ribbon was. Reminders that he didn’t know much more of her life and world than she did of his.
“You are awake.”
“Yes, my lady. I didn’t want you to stop.” That was honest, for certain. “I thought if I spoke, you would.”
“You are wrong about your body. The scars only make it more interesting. Many women must have enjoyed looking at you.”
“How about you?”
She poked him with a talon, and he jumped, not expecting it. “You seek compliments.”
“I seek to know if I please you, my lady. You’re the only woman I want to pleasure. Stab me again with those claws, I’ll pinch you in a soft spot.”
He kept his tone mild, slightly teasing, but with the underlying threat still in place. He couldn’t see her face to determine her reaction, but he detected that coveted slight catch of breath, and savored it for the intrigued response he knew it was.
“You have no soft spots I can find to pinch back,” she mused, moving to his biceps. “I like this drawing, between your shoulders.”
The tattoo between his shoulder blades was a tangle of stylized snakes, artfully arranged around the words Medusa’s Heart. He’d first had it done when he was a teenager, a simpler, less expensive design. He’d had it re-inked by a top-rated tattoo artist within the past couple years, but even when the original design was faded, its message had never dimmed.
The heart that beat in his chest was all hers.
Medusa was strong and dangerous, with an underlying fragility that called to him. She was a well-shielded, high-powered and damaged submissive soul, the ultimate test for a Dom who craved that challenge. Who craved her. Go big or go home.
He wasn’t going home.

EXCERPT

Theo took the stairs as quickly as he could. He knew where he was going, but he wasn’t going to think about it. For the first time since he’d gotten home, he didn’t care about his past or figuring out who he’d been. He wanted. He wanted something right now and that felt good.
She’d been right. There wasn’t a place for guilt here.
He strode up the stairs, her weight comforting in his arms. Yeah, he wasn’t going to think about that either. He was going to enjoy it, not wonder why his body remembered her when his mind would not.
“Hey, is everything okay?”
Damn it. Case was standing at the top of the stairs, obviously having come out of the privacy rooms. His wife was at his side, her face flushed. Mia had sex hair. Good for them. Red was about to have sex hair, too. Lots of filthy sex hair. “Everything’s great. Night.”
Case put a hand on his shoulder. “Whoa. I thought you were going to take this slow, brother.”
“If you don’t get your hand off him right this second, Taggart, I am going to ensure that you never have children,” Red said, her eyes narrowing on his brother. “You won’t be able to cock block anyone because you won’t have a damn cock. Am I clear?”
Case’s hands came up immediately as though he knew that tone and was not going there. “Trying to help.”
“Three is clean and has plenty of condoms. We’re taking a monitor turn up here. I checked all the rooms.” Mia grinned at him. She actually was helpful. “Have fun and we’ll see you at home.”
He didn’t bother to look back. Case could give him a lecture later. He wasn’t waiting anymore. He’d waited forever. Even when he couldn’t remember her face, he’d known she was there. He’d felt her, or rather he’d felt her absence.
Could he truly be with a woman whose name he couldn’t think without hurting her?
It didn’t matter. He wasn’t making those decisions tonight. He was enjoying her. His sub. He was bringing her pleasure and he probably should do a good job of it because his sub was fucking mean.
And fragile. He’d seen the moment she’d thought he was rejecting her. He’d watch her skin flush and her body start to turn in on itself. She was such a mix of strength and need. It was intoxicating. He wanted so badly to be the man who gave her what she needed.
Affection. Pleasure. Comfort.
Love—he wasn’t thinking that word tonight. Nope. Pleasure was way better.
He kicked out lightly at the partially open door number three. It looked like Mia had done her job. The room was perfectly clean, the lighting soft and romantic. The best thing about this room though was the complete lack of any of his friends or family being here.
It was him and her, and that was exactly what he wanted. No Ian. No Li. No Kai asking them hundreds of questions. Him and her and the night.
He tossed her on the bed and stood back, looking down at her. “Tell me why you thought I was rejecting you.”
The instant she hit the bed, she was up on her knees. So graceful. So deadly. What the hell was this woman like out in the field? She moved like a predator, but the look on her face was pure sarcasm. “Uhm, your words. That’s what sealed it for me. ‘I don’t want to do this’ is generally considered a rejection.”
Somehow she managed to put an unsaid “dumbass” on the end of her sentences. Not all of them. She’d been perfectly sweet most of the night, but she could turn it on when she wanted to. “I didn’t mean that. When I said the words, I watched you change. Why? You’re good at slapping people down. I wouldn’t have said that until today.”
“Because I’ve been careful around you,” she admitted.
“Why? You think I’m delicate?”
Her lips curled up. “I don’t think you’re delicate. I think I’m a lot to take, but I also am starting to believe I was wrong. You like me rough.”
“I like you a lot.” More than he could ever tell her.

Review

Wow! Just wow! Lexi Blake has done it again! Submission Is Not Enough is, in my opinion, the best book in an already outstanding series. This is Theo and Erin's story - the one we've all been waiting for. And boy oh boy was it worth the wait! I was blown away by the storyline and the way Lexi Blake skilfully blended the heart wrenching, emotional scenes with the passionate, sinfully hot moments. There was of course also some laugh out loud moments provided by the witty banter we've come to expect from the MacKay-Taggart boys.

Theo Taggart 'died' only to be brought back to life by a twisted doctor who wiped his memory and used him to further her evil work. He's rescued by his brothers, but he remembers nothing about his family or Erin, the love of his life. Erin was devastated when she lost Theo and is determined to help Theo to get his life back and rediscover their love. While Erin battles Theo's demons and the damage done to him by Dr Hope McDonald, the evil doctor is making plans to get Theo back and to get rid of Erin forever.

Erin has always been one of my favourite characters in the series, she's so tough but Theo and his family have brought out her softer side. I enjoyed the use of flashbacks to give us an insight into the beginning of their relationship, it helped the reader to understand exactly how much they meant to each other and how much they both lost when Theo 'died'. Both Erin and Theo have been through so much and this story was very emotional, I was in floods of tears at times. Submission Is Not Enough is such a powerful book, it's a story you'll never forget. Five stars.

I received an ARC of this book to read and review.

Sometimes getting what you want…makes you crave something more

Purchasing a Dom from a charity auction was the wildest thing Liz had ever done. The chance to bring her secret fantasy to life, to be a submissive—even just for one night—was worth any price. And Gareth was everything she wanted in a Master. He touched, he taught, he tantalized. He opened her world to pleasures she’d never imagined. But was it enough?

After one night turned into a blurred-line relationship, Liz’s feelings for Gareth went beyond desire. Yet the kink, no matter how hot, had her wondering if she could ever have a normal relationship. Her Dom was a man with a tragic past and he’d put rules in place from the start.  If Liz chose to break them would she lose the intense passion she’d just discovered—as well as the man she loved?...

Review

I'll be honest and admit that I really struggled with this book. I loved the sound of the blurb but it didn't quite live up to my expectations. I enjoyed the first half, but then I lost interest in the story and it was an effort to finish it. It's a real shame as I've read other books by this author and I really enjoyed them.

Liz decided to bring her fantasies to life by purchasing a Dom for the night at a charity auction. Gareth was everything she'd ever wanted in a Master and he gave her more pleasure than she could imagine. But Gareth had a traumatic past and put strict rules into place when one night blurred into a Dom/sub relationship. Do they have a real future together?

There were some fantastic BDSM and sex scenes in this book, they were well written and very hot. Unfortunately though the storyline itself failed to keep my attention in the second half of the book, which is why I've only been able to give it three stars.

EXCERPT:

Prologue

What was hell?
If you asked a member of any church today, they’d say it was nightmarish—a dark and gloomy place filled with horrific images and boughs of endless pain. A place where demons roamed freely, feeding off the dregs of the deceased.
A part of humanity that lost its moral compass: the common sinner.
These pour souls sinned in order to achieve greatness; sold their very essence to attain the vanity-filled dreams everyone covets:
Money.
Power.
Respect.
And at the end they’d find themselves with nothing but eternal pain.
Then there were those we called our loved ones. Targeted, they lost the small morsel of their souls that made them good. It made them an easy target.
At the very least, that was what the religious people of the world claimed. Wanted us to believe.
Neither of those descriptions meant shit to me. Religion never mattered much. Not when you’d lost so much and witnessed firsthand just what losing faith did to a person.
I wasn’t most people.
Most had chosen to believe the words drilled into their minds from an early age, but I knew better. Hell wasn’t somewhere dark where the eternal flames glowed and the sinners were condemned to—to pay for the unforgivable deeds of their past life. Acts that were unforgivable in the eyes of the church.
Stealing.
Killing.
Coveting.
In my reality, though, that was a blatant lie.
Hell was here, surrounding us day in and day out. We paid for our sins in life, not death. One way or another, karma would collect those that wronged another. No one, no matter who the fuck they were, could escape this bitch named life.
Problem was that no matter how much I looked at my current situation, I was at a loss. What the fuck had I done to deserve her?
My hell—the one that tortured me while both awake and asleep—wasn’t dark or terrifying. It wasn’t painful in the general sense. Well, that was unless you counted the pain my cock had suffered to be life threatening. I guess it could be considered cruel; she loved to torture me when I couldn’t react or make her pay.
“You are here to work, not fuck me. My pussy’s not on your daily task sheet!”
I’d never been so hard…so fucking swollen, as I’d been in her presence. Twitching and pulsating against the zipper of my Levi’s, I hurt, and she refused to right the wrong she’d created.
“I don’t fuck my employees…not even the promising outline of your big cock will change that.”
You see, my personal hell was all wrapped up in a lustful package. A body created by God himself, made for the sole purpose of fucking up my quiet and ordinary life. This woman brought me down to my knees—demanded that I pay on a daily basis for the lustful thoughts and impulses she, herself, caused.
“Worry about making sure all the drywall on this floor is up; drilling me isn’t on the agenda and never will be.”
And I would gladly repent daily, on my knees at her temple, if she would just give in to me.
My version of hell was a woman. A cock tease.
A woman whose inner and outer beauty surpassed the normal standard society had deemed appropriate. Janelle was a temptress, my personal mistress.
Rendered me incapable of both speech and function at times when all I wanted to do was make her mine. One day Janelle would break me, of that there was no doubt. Problem was that in pushing me past my breaking point, she was losing her power over me and becoming my target. My prey.
When that day came, I would take her without mercy. With no remorse because by then she would be as consumed in her need for me as I was for her.
This woman, angel, or my personal demon, has had my dick hard, leaking and begging for her attention since she first entered my life all those glorious months ago. Now, it was her turn to be miserable.
To feel an eighth of the demands my body made whenever she entered a room. I would make her beg me. Come from a mere look.
Janelle would cry out for me one day, and only then would I gift her my cock.
Her time was up.
I was coming for her.

Review

Alphas of Sin is a fantastic collection of short stories from twenty top romance authors. I enjoyed every single story, for me they were all deserving of four or five stars. There is a great mixture of styles and themes, there really is something for everyone here. The stories do all have something in common though - they are all red hot! Seriously, this book will set your e-reader on fire!

I love anthologies for many reasons, the main one being that they are a great way to discover new authors. While some of these authors were already firm favourites of mine, most were completely new to me. I'll definitely be checking out other books from some of those authors.

The other awesome thing about Alphas of Sin, is that all net proceeds go to 4 Paws For Ability who train service dogs for disabled children and veterans. This is a cause close to my heart as I'm a wheelchair user who's lucky enough to have a service dog, so I know how life changing these dogs are. Elgin, my beautiful black Labrador, was trained by a similar charity who are based here in the UK and he's completely transformed my life and given me back some independence. Please do support these authors and help them raise as much money as possible for 4 Paws For Ability.

Alphas of Sin is a great anthology that receives four shiny stars.

I received an ARC of this book to read and review.
