FBI agent Sean Malone put in a transfer to return home to North Carolina in order to be closer to his expanding family. What he didn’t expect was a pleasant surprise from his youth. Little Gracie Whitman is all grown up now and drop-dead gorgeous, and he finds himself thinking about her in ways he’d never done before.

When Grace’s parents retire to Arizona from New York, she decides to follow her dream of opening her own physical therapy center. Whisper, North Carolina, where her aunt lives and where Grace had spent her summers, is the perfect place for it—especially when she finds her childhood crush has returned to Whisper as well.

As the two get to know each other all over again, Sean’s month-long planned vacation is brutally interrupted. A deranged serial killer has settled in Dare County, North Carolina, and after three victims, the local law enforcement is bringing in all the help they can. Are the killings over or have they just begun? And if they continue, who will be the next victim?

The Malone Brothers series can be read as stand alones but they follow a timeline and are best read in order.

Review

The Devil's Spare Change is the second book in Samantha A. Cole's vanilla series, The Malone Brothers. This is a suspenseful, gripping thriller that skilfully combines a sweet romance with a hunt for a deranged serial killer.  The book works well as a standalone, but I'd recommend reading book one first as it is so good! I think this is one of Ms Cole's best books (which is really saying something), it is quite simply outstanding.  I really liked how we were given insights into the killers thoughts and feelings throughout the book. The serial killer was an amazingly psychotic character - this author really does create the best villains!

Sean Malone is an FBI agent who has just relocated in order to be near his family. Before he starts his new job Sean is taking some well deserved vacation time - until it is interrupted by a brutal murder and he is put on the task force to solve it. Also returning to the area is physiotherapist Grace Whitman. She has moved to be closer to her aunt and to open her own physio therapy practice. Grace had a crush on Sean and his brother when she was a teenager, and those feelings return when she meets him again. Sean and Grace grow closer, but with a killer on the loose danger is never far away.

This book really is fantastic. The lunatic killer storyline is full of suspense and intrigue, it is brilliantly written. The murders are brutal and you can't help but shed some tears over the killings, but this is balanced beautifully by the charming romantic storyline. I highly recommend this book so The Devil's Spare Change receives five out of five stars.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review.

About the author

Samantha A. Cole is a retired policewoman and former paramedic who has started a third career as an author. She has lived her entire life in the suburbs of New York City and has plans to become a ‘snow-bird’ between New York and Florida. Her two dogs, Jinx and Bella, keep her company and remind their ‘mom’ to take a break from writing every once in a while to go for a walk, of course with them in tow.

An avid reader since childhood, Samantha was often found with a book in hand and sometimes one in each. After being gifted with a stack of romance novels from her grandmother, her love affair with the genre began in her teens.

Samantha is continuing to work on the Trident Security series as well as a new trilogy, The Malone Brothers. She also has a few other stand-alone books in the works.
